Buy my flat

Perfect if you:

  • Don't have a massive downpayment
  • Are fed up of landlords
  • Need a cheap place to live while you pursue your dreams
  • Actually kind of like small spaces

The time has come

I'm finally able to start preparing to move to Canada, which means I will at some point be selling my studio flat in Rotherham.

I reckon I'll be moving out in summer 2026. If you think you might be ready by then to buy a very cheap place - perhaps as your first home - then I'd love to chat.

The leasehold contract requires that you actually live here. No buy-to-let landlords!

Overview

  • Adorably petite studio flat (about 270 sq ft / 25 sq mt)
  • Located in Rotherham, near Clifton Park
  • Ground floor in a very quiet building
  • £60,000

What it's like

When I bought it they called it a one-bedroom, but really they'd just erected some flimsy wardrobe doors to separate off the sleeping area. I've replaced that with some glamorous red curtains, and built a cabin bed with lots of storage space underneath.

Is Rotherham the most exciting place to be a young, queer artist? No. But this flat is right by Clifton Park, so you have access to beautiful outdoor spaces and you're not far from the train station. I bought this place with the intention of travelling a lot, so being close enough to the train station was really important. Then I got sick, and being close to the park - and on the ground floor! - became a huge boon.

Another reason I bought this place was the affordability - I only had £5500 for a down payment, but I wanted the security of a mortgage, because life as an artist is precarious and when times are tough it's easier to negotiate with a bank than with a landlord. I bought this flat for £52,500 in 2020, and since then it's had new appliances and a new bathroom. I'd like to get close to £60,000 for it, to cover the cost of all that stuff.

It's leasehold, but not in the new-build way where they charge you a hefty fee every year - you just pay a "peppercorn rent". The big additional fee is the £90 monthly maintenance fee that you pay to the management company, which covers services including the upkeep of the very nice gardens around the building, building repairs, etc.
