Work with Zoyander

"How do I get arts funding to make
[weird videogames]?"

(Or anything else: I work with all kinds of art!)

"I feel so awkward writing an artist statement"
"Is my work representing difficult issues respectfully?"

Let me help!

Whether it's game developers navigating cultural issues at major companies, or independent artists planning project proposals, I help people to:

  • create meaningful work, grounded in context
  • identify their values, fears, and purpose
  • make sense of criticism and generate interesting feedback
  • see their work from different standpoints
  • craft compelling narratives for audiences and funders

Consulting and research: for media companies, arts organisations, etc.

I research contemporary and historical issues, including material culture, technoscience, language, international relations, marginalised groups, etc. My methods include archival research, oral history and ethnographic interviews, as well as literature reviews of relevant journals. I share the results as written reports and presentations for the client institution.

Game Changers, Megaverse

Researcher and games consultant for VR interactive performance about climate change. They wanted to understand how a flying robot might be powered in the near future, when we no longer use lithium-ion batteries. I researched a range of emerging fuel cell technologies, and provided a report summarising current research trends and use cases.

Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance

Research and critical writing commission for Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance (ROAR), to help evaluate and summarise the organisation's history and impact after more than a decade of activity. I carried out oral history interviews and archival research, digitised ROAR's paper archive of press and events, and produced a report that combined written and audio narrative, quantitative research, and interactive maps.

Access support: for artists, individuals, and partnerships

For many of us, funding is an essential part of maintaining our practice in the arts and culture. However, there are often barriers in our way when we try to apply for funding. If you need to secure grants for your projects, but struggle to complete applications, you might be eligible for access support. Some funders will directly pay an access support worker of your choice to help with your grant.

I have years of experience writing applications for grants, fellowships, residencies, etc. I have supported people who work in many different art forms, who need help due to chronic illness or disability, including mental health challenges and neurodiversity. I can help you with tasks such as:

Writing clear and concise proposals
Editing your artist statement
Managing large amounts of information
Following up with project partners and mentors
Reviewing relevant materials from your past activities
Creating budgets and timelines
Navigating online application systems
Creating a safe backup of your information
Signposting to resources, helping you get support

I'm always happy to chat about potentially supporting someone with an application.

I have created Notion templates for grant application workflows, including tools that simplify the process of writing applications to Arts Council England. If you find them helpful, please consider giving a donation.

"You can choose the person that provides support to you. This is not limited to experienced support workers, but it is helpful if they understand arts, culture and creativity and our funding process." (I definitely do!)

"If you identify as disabled, you can also apply for additional access costs to help you complete this application. There is a separate question dedicated to it in the application form (section 1E) and this cost is covered regardless of the outcome of your application. It does not need to be included in your project budget." (from International Collaboration Grants FAQ)
